Believed to be built as a place of hospitality, the original building burnt down in 1890, but from its ashes rose the villa that proudly stands to this day. The Juuhl family, who owned the property, ran it as an inn, a liquor store, and a grocery. A decline in liqour sales, coupled with expensive construction and the installation of a telephone line, led to the inn's closure and the Juuhl family's bankruptcy in 1894.

The property was sold to new owners, who held it until 1911 when Bergen Municipality took over. Over the years it served as a girl's home, a boy's home, a holiday colony, and a school. During World War II, the Germans occupied the residence. Although the exact nature of its use remains unclear, it is believed to have functioned as a headquarters during that time.
